Hyperhidrosis(Excessive Sweating)

Sweating is a natural bodily function that helps regulate temperature, but for those with hyperhidrosis, sweating can become excessive and unpredictable. This condition can cause not only physical discomfort but also emotional stress, affecting daily activities and social interactions. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available to help manage hyperhidrosis, providing relief and restoring confidence.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterised by excessive sweating that goes beyond
the body’s normal needs for temperature regulation. It often affects the palms, soles
of the feet, underarms, and face, causing discomfort, embarrassment, and
sometimes interference with daily activities. While it is not typically dangerous,
hyperhidrosis can significantly impact a person’s quality of life.

There are two main types of hyperhidrosis:

  • Primary (idiopathic) hyperhidrosis, where there is no clear medical cause.
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis, which is linked to underlying conditions such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or the side effects of certain medications. (Our dermatologists are skilled in conducting thorough investigations to determine the cause of your hyperhidrosis, if necessary.)

Our team is among the most experienced in Australia in treating hyperhidrosis. Dr. Manoharan, a pioneer in procedural treatments for this condition, has been providing effective solutions since 2006.

Treatment Options for Hyperhidrosis

Managing hyperhidrosis depends on the severity of the condition, the areas affected, and individual patient needs. There are a variety of treatments available, ranging from topical therapies to advanced procedures.

1. Topical Treatments
The first line of defence against excessive sweating is often topical antiperspirants, which work by temporarily blocking the sweat ducts. Aluminum chloride-based antiperspirants are stronger than over-the-counter antiperspirants and are often prescribed for mild to moderate cases. These products are typically applied at night to the affected areas and washed off in the morning. Side effects may include skin irritation, which can be managed by using lower concentrations or applying moisturisers. Your dermatologist may also prescribe compounded agents that may be able to reduce your sweating locally.

2. Systemic Medications
When topical treatments are not effective, oral medications may be prescribed. Anticholinergic medications work by reducing sweat production systemically. These drugs block the action of acetylcholine, a chemical in the body that stimulates sweat glands. However, side effects like dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision may limit their use. Other blocking and sedating drugs may also be considered if anxiety-induced sweating is part of the issue, as they help manage the psychological triggers.

3. Sweat reduction injections
For individuals with localised hyperhidrosis, particularly in the underarms, hands, or feet, sweat blocking injections offer a highly effective treatment. They work by temporarily blocking the nerves that signal the sweat glands to activate. The effects last on average about 4-6 months, making it a popular option for those seeking a longer-term solution. Some patients may even get results beyond 12 months. The procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed with topical anaesthetics in our clinic, and is well tolerated by adults and teenagers.

4. MiraDry
One of the newer, non-invasive treatments for underarm hyperhidrosis is MiraDry. This TGA-approved device uses controlled electromagnetic energy to permanently destroy sweat glands in the armpit. Since the body has millions of sweat glands, eliminating those in the underarms does not affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature elsewhere. The results are immediate and long-lasting, with most patients seeing a 60-80% reduction in sweat after one or two sessions. MiraDry also targets odour glands, offering an added benefit for individuals concerned with excessive body odour.

Dr Manoharan’s clinic was the first in Australia to offer this revolutionary treatment,
and he and his team performed multiple studies on the MiraDry procedure with his
patient cohort. We are one of the most experienced MiraDry clinics in the country.
