What Causes Birthmarks?

Birthmarks are coloured marks that appear on the skin at birth or shortly after. They may be vascular (caused by abnormal blood vessels) or pigmented (caused by excess melanin). Common types include port-wine stains, haemangiomas, café-au-lait spots, and congenital melanocytic naevi.

While most are harmless, some can grow, darken or impact self-confidence. Our expert dermatologists assess each case individually to determine the safest and most effective treatment plan.

Types of Birthmarks We Treat

We diagnose and treat a wide range of vascular and pigmented birthmarks across all skin types.

Port-Wine Stains

Deep red or purple vascular birthmarks often found on the face or neck.

Haemangiomas

Raised, red growths that may appear within weeks of birth.

Café-au-lait Spots

Light brown, flat pigmented spots that may increase in size over time.

Congenital Melanocytic Naevi

Moles present at birth, varying in size and pigmentation.

Becker’s Naevus

Brown patches often with increased hair growth, typically appearing in adolescence.

Our Treatment Options

Birthmarks vary widely in type, depth, and impact-which is why every treatment begins with a specialist assessment. From vascular and pigment lasers to paediatric care and long-term monitoring, our treatment options are tailored to safely improve appearance while protecting healthy skin.

Vascular Lasers (eg DermaV, ExcelV)

Targets blood vessels in red or purple birthmarks for gradual lightening.

Pigment Lasers (eg Enlighten Picosecond)

Break down melanin in pigmented birthmarks with minimal skin disruption.

CO2 & Erbium Lasers (eg Joule, UltraPulse, Dynamis)

Used for selected raised or textured lesions to smooth and improve appearance.

Paediatric Dermatology Assessment

Gentle, age-appropriate care plans for birthmark treatment in infants and children.

Long Term Monitory & Care

For complex or evolving birthmarks, we offer ongoing skin checks, treatment adjustments, and dermatologist-led guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are birthmark treatments safe for children?
Yes. Our dermatologists are highly experienced in paediatric laser treatment and tailor protocols to ensure safety, comfort, and efficacy at every stage.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of sessions depends on the size, depth, and type of birthmark. Vascular lesions will require at least 3–6 treatments or more for optimal fading.
Is laser painful?
Most treatments involve only mild discomfort. For children or sensitive areas, we use topical anaesthesia to ensure comfort during the session.
Will my birthmark go away completely?
While complete removal isn’t always possible, most patients see significant fading and improvement in colour, texture, and visibility with proper treatment.
Is there downtime?
Downtime varies depending on the treatment type. Some redness or swelling is common, but most patients return to daily activities within 24–48 hours.
Can pigmented birthmarks become cancerous?
Some pigmented lesions, especially larger congenital naevi, require regular monitoring. Our dermatologists will assess and advise if ongoing observation or biopsy is necessary.
