Treatment Time: 60–90 minutes

You’ll be anaesthetised for comfort, with the level of anaesthesia tailored to the area treated, treatment intensity, your medical history, and personal tolerance.

Immediate Recovery

Expect redness, swelling, and a weepy appearance for 7–14 days. Itching or a mild burning sensation is common and can be managed with prescribed aftercare creams and tablets.

Post-Care Instructions

Following Dr Manoharan’s post-treatment plan is essential. This includes keeping the area clean and moisturised, avoiding direct sun exposure, and refraining from strenuous activity during recovery.

Results Timeline

Skin begins improving by Day 5, with continued results unfolding over the next 2–3 months as collagen regenerates and the skin remodels.

What Is The Protocol?

Created by Dr Manoharan, this signature treatment combines multiple laser modalities in one powerful session to reverse visible signs of ageing and photodamage. It can only be performed safely by highly trained procedural specialist laser dermatologists.

The success of laser resurfacing largely depends on the experience and qualifications of the laser specialist. Dr Manoharan has been performing advanced laser resurfacing for almost 15 years and is one of Australia’s leading experts in the procedure.

He lectures nationally and internationally on his techniques, and is involved in training doctors, dermatologists and plastic surgeons on advanced laser resurfacing, through his training organisation, DermEd - www.dermed.com.au.

Each Flashback is customised, but may include:

This high-intensity resurfacing treatment removes micro-columns of damaged skin, triggering deep collagen regeneration. It is ideal for deeper wrinkles, acne scarring, and coarse texture. Ablative lasers provide the most dramatic results but require more recovery time.

For patients needing less downtime, lighter fractional lasers deliver energy in a controlled, superficial pattern to smooth texture, refine pores, and brighten tone-perfect for early signs of ageing and maintenance treatments.

This component targets broken capillaries, redness, and flushing. By gently collapsing visible blood vessels, the vascular laser helps even out skin tone and reduce background redness, common in rosacea-prone or sun-damaged skin.

With ultra-short pulse technology, the picosecond laser shatters unwanted pigment and stimulates collagen with minimal thermal damage. It’s especially effective for pigment irregularities, fine lines, and skin rejuvenation on darker skin tones.

BBL is a powerful IPL device used to treat brown spots, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. It’s also known for its role in preventing future skin ageing through gene expression modulation-making it a key part of the 10 Year Flashback protocol.

Post-treatment, LED therapy accelerates healing, calms inflammation, and supports optimal collagen synthesis. It’s a gentle but important part of recovery, ensuring the skin regenerates quickly and comfortably.

Each 10 Year Flashback treatment is fully customised and performed with precision-guided by Dr. Manoharan’s protocol and executed by our specialist team to deliver transformative results safely.

At Dermatology Clinics Australia, we house Australia’s most advanced suite of laser technology-including:

– Ultra Pulse Alpha CO2

– Sciton Joule Erbium Yag

Each protocol is tailored for your skin type, concerns, and recovery tolerance. There is no one-size-fits-all-and that’s exactly why results can be so significant.

Ablative laser resurfacing involves the use of gold-standard CO2 and Erbium:YAG lasers, usually in combination, to remove the outer layer of the skin, which is composed of damaged or compromised skin. This allows a fresh bed of new skin to regenerate and produce new collagen, resulting in a smoother and tighter complexion.

During the procedure, the patient is generally given light sedation or twilight anaesthetic. The laser is then passed over the skin in a controlled manner, removing the outer layer of skin cells. The heat from the laser also stimulates collagen production, which helps to firm and tighten the skin.

After the procedure, the patient will need to keep the treated area clean and moisturised to promote healing. They will be provided with an aftercare pack, scripts and growth factor serums. It is also important to avoid direct sunlight, keep well hydrated and rested during the first 1-2 weeks of healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for laser resurfacing?
Patients experiencing fine lines, sun damage, acne scarring, enlarged pores, or dull texture may benefit. Your dermatologist or clinical team will assess your skin to ensure you’re suitable for this treatment.
Does the treatment hurt?
A topical or local anaesthetic is used to ensure comfort during the procedure. Some patients may feel a warm or prickling sensation depending on the intensity selected. Mild discomfort is normal in the first few days after laser resurfacing. You may experience sensations similar to sunburn-such as heat, tightness, itching, or mild stinging. These symptoms are temporary and can be effectively managed with the prescribed aftercare products, cool compresses, and gentle skin support. Our team provides a complete recovery plan to keep you comfortable and ensure smooth healing.
What is the recovery time like?
Downtime depends on the depth of resurfacing, but most patients experience redness, swelling, and flaking for 3–7 days. Deeper treatments may require 7–14 days of visible recovery. Post-care support is provided.
How long do results last?
With proper skin care and sun protection, results can last several years. Some patients choose to have maintenance treatments for optimal results.
Are there any side effects?
Temporary redness, swelling, and sensitivity are normal. In rare cases, prolonged pigmentation changes or infection may occur, which is why we tailor treatment plans and provide detailed aftercare to minimise risk.
Can I have this treatment if I’ve had cosmetic injectables?
Yes, laser resurfacing can be combined with cosmetic injectables depending on timing. Your clinician will guide you on how to sequence treatments for best results.
When will I see results?
Some patients notice improvement within a week, with continued improvement over 2–3 months as new collagen develops.
What other skin concerns can this treatment help with?
In addition to ageing-related concerns, the 10 Year Flashback laser resurfacing protocol can also improve acne scarring, enlarged pores, pigmentation disorders (like melasma and sunspots), surgical scars, and overall skin dullness. It’s a versatile treatment suitable for a wide range of skin conditions when guided by an experienced dermatology team.
Can the 10 Year Flashback be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Laser resurfacing is often most effective when integrated into a broader treatment plan. It can be safely combined with modalities such as RF microneedling, LED therapy, injectables, or biostimulatory treatments-either in the same session (where appropriate) or strategically staged. Your dermatologist will advise on the safest, most effective sequencing to achieve optimal results.
Is laser resurfacing appropriate and safe for all skin types?
Laser resurfacing can be highly effective for many skin types, but it requires careful assessment and customisation. At DCA, we tailor each treatment to your individual skin tone, type, and condition. For patients with deeper skin tones, we may recommend specific wavelengths, gentler settings, or staged protocols to minimise the risk of pigmentation changes. Every treatment is dermatologist-led to ensure safety and efficacy.
